common threads: part of the distributed manufacturing lab studio taught by zach cohen. completed with jacob wilmer and wan khairul ehsan.

the distributed manufacturing lab sought to challenge traditional methods of making via digital fabrication during the distanced semester of autumn 2020.

our group became interested in the social aspects of textile production, specifically cultural expression through patterns. Researching textiles from around the world and across history, we created an interactive online generator built around the common traits discovered in our analyses.

users could submit their patterns to our digital quilt. coupling a google maps api, each pattern is linked to a time, place, and person; creating a worldwide network of digital artifacts.

each tile was 3d printed and incorporated into an ever-growing physical trace of the common threads process.
